Bulging Disc Treatment Dublin

A bulging disc doesn't have to mean surgery or a lifetime of pain. Our specialist team uses non-surgical spinal decompression to relieve disc pressure and restore function without drugs or operations.

What Is a Bulging Disc?

A bulging disc occurs when the outer fibrous ring of an intervertebral disc weakens and the disc protrudes beyond its normal boundary. Unlike a herniated disc where the inner nucleus pulposus breaks through the outer ring a bulging disc remains intact but extends outward, often pressing on nearby nerve roots or the spinal cord itself.

Bulging discs are most common in the lumbar spine (lower back) and cervical spine (neck), and can cause significant pain, stiffness and neurological symptoms. They are often described as a 'slipped disc', though the disc does not literally slip it simply loses its normal shape and position.

Symptoms of a Bulging Disc

Localised lower back or neck pain, often described as a deep ache
Radiating pain into the buttock, leg or foot (if lumbar) or arm and hand (if cervical)
Numbness or tingling in the extremities
Muscle weakness in the affected limb
Pain that worsens with prolonged sitting, bending or lifting
Stiffness and reduced range of movement in the spine

What Causes a Bulging Disc?

Bulging discs are usually the result of gradual wear and tear rather than a single injury, though acute trauma can accelerate the process.

Age-Related Degeneration

As we age, discs lose water content and elasticity, making them more susceptible to bulging under normal loads.

Poor Posture & Ergonomics

Prolonged sitting, forward head posture and poor lifting technique place uneven stress on the discs, accelerating degeneration.

Repetitive Loading

Occupations or activities involving repeated bending, twisting or heavy lifting increase the cumulative load on lumbar discs.

Acute Injury

A sudden impact, fall or awkward movement can cause a disc to bulge, particularly if the disc was already weakened.

How We Treat Bulging Discs at DC Physiotherapy

Our two-modality approach targets the disc directly reducing pressure, promoting healing and rebuilding the muscular support the spine needs.

Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression

Our computer-controlled decompression table applies precise, intermittent traction forces that create negative intradiscal pressure. This draws the bulging disc material back towards its normal position, reduces nerve compression and encourages the influx of nutrients and oxygen needed for disc repair.

Chartered Physiotherapy

Alongside decompression, our chartered physiotherapists address the muscular and postural factors that contributed to the disc problem. A personalised exercise programme restores core stability, spinal mobility and movement patterns reducing the risk of recurrence.

Education & Self-Management

We equip you with the knowledge to manage your spine between sessions and after discharge covering posture, ergonomics, safe movement and the exercises that will keep you pain-free long-term.

Your Treatment Journey

1

Initial Assessment

A full clinical assessment to identify the level and severity of the bulging disc and confirm suitability for decompression.

2

Personalised Programme

A tailored plan combining decompression and physiotherapy, typically 10 sessions over 4–8 weeks.

3

Decompression Sessions

30-minute sessions on our decompression table. Most patients notice reduced pain and improved mobility within the first few sessions.

4

Rehabilitation & Discharge

As symptoms resolve, we progress to active rehabilitation and provide a home programme to maintain your results.
