Herniated Disc Treatment Dublin
A herniated disc can cause severe pain, numbness and weakness but surgery is rarely the only option. Our specialist team uses non-surgical spinal decompression to address the disc directly and relieve nerve compression.
What Is a Herniated Disc?
A herniated disc also called a prolapsed or ruptured disc occurs when the soft inner core of an intervertebral disc (the nucleus pulposus) pushes through a tear or weakness in the tough outer ring (the annulus fibrosus). The escaped material can press directly on nearby nerve roots, causing pain, numbness and weakness along the path of the affected nerve.
Herniated discs most commonly occur in the lumbar spine (L4–L5 and L5–S1 are the most frequently affected levels), though they can also occur in the cervical spine. Lumbar disc herniation is one of the most common causes of sciatica pain radiating from the lower back through the buttock and down the leg.
Symptoms of a Herniated Disc
What Causes a Herniated Disc?
Disc herniation is usually the result of gradual disc degeneration combined with a triggering event though it can also occur suddenly with acute injury.
Disc Degeneration
As discs age, they lose water content and become less flexible, making the outer ring more prone to tearing under normal loads.
Sudden Strain or Injury
Lifting a heavy object with poor technique, a sudden twist or a fall can cause the nucleus to rupture through a weakened outer ring.
Repetitive Stress
Repeated bending, twisting and lifting common in manual occupations gradually weaken the disc's outer ring over time.
Genetic Predisposition
Some individuals have a genetic tendency towards disc degeneration, making herniation more likely even without significant physical strain.
How We Treat Herniated Discs at DC Physiotherapy
Our approach combines two evidence-informed therapies to decompress the affected disc, reduce nerve irritation and restore function without surgery or injections.
Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression
Using a computer-controlled decompression table, we apply gentle, intermittent traction forces that create negative intradiscal pressure. This negative pressure draws herniated disc material back towards the centre of the disc, reducing pressure on the nerve root and promoting the flow of nutrients and oxygen into the disc to support healing.
Chartered Physiotherapy
Our chartered physiotherapists design a personalised rehabilitation programme to address the muscular imbalances and postural habits that contributed to the herniation. Core strengthening, spinal mobility work and movement re-education run alongside decompression to maximise and sustain results.
Pain Management & Education
We provide guidance on activity modification, posture and ergonomics to reduce load on the affected disc during recovery and equip you with the tools to protect your spine long-term.
Your Treatment Journey
Initial Assessment
A thorough clinical assessment to identify the level and severity of the herniation and confirm suitability for decompression.
Personalised Treatment Plan
A tailored programme combining decompression and physiotherapy, typically 10 sessions over 4–8 weeks.
Decompression Sessions
30-minute sessions on our decompression table. Most patients notice a reduction in leg pain within the first few sessions.
Rehabilitation & Discharge
As pain resolves, we transition to active rehabilitation and provide a home exercise programme to maintain your results.
