Sciatica Treatment Dublin
Persistent sciatica doesn't have to mean surgery. Our specialist team combines non-surgical spinal decompression with chartered physiotherapy to address the root cause not just the symptoms.
What Is Sciatica?
Sciatica is pain that travels along the sciatic nerve the longest nerve in the body from the lower back through the buttock and down one or both legs. It is typically caused by compression or irritation of one or more of the nerve roots that form the sciatic nerve, most commonly at the L4, L5 or S1 levels of the lumbar spine.
The pain can range from a mild ache to a sharp, burning or electric-shock sensation. Numbness, tingling and muscle weakness in the affected leg are also common. Symptoms are often worse when sitting, coughing or sneezing, and may be relieved temporarily by walking or lying down.

What Causes Sciatica?
In most cases sciatica is caused by a problem with the intervertebral discs of the lumbar spine. Understanding the underlying cause is essential to choosing the right treatment.
Herniated or Bulging Disc
A disc that has bulged or herniated can press directly on the sciatic nerve root, causing inflammation and pain along the nerve's path.
Disc Degeneration
As discs lose height and hydration over time, the space available for nerve roots narrows, increasing the risk of compression.
Spinal Stenosis
Narrowing of the spinal canal — often due to age-related changes — can compress the nerve roots that form the sciatic nerve.
Piriformis Syndrome
Tightness or spasm in the piriformis muscle in the buttock can irritate the sciatic nerve as it passes beneath or through the muscle.
How We Treat Sciatica at DC Physiotherapy
Our approach combines two evidence-informed therapies to decompress the affected disc, reduce nerve irritation and restore function
Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression
Using a computer-controlled decompression table, we apply gentle traction forces that create negative intradiscal pressure. This draws herniated disc material back towards the centre, reduces nerve compression and promotes the flow of nutrients and oxygen into the disc to support healing.
Chartered Physiotherapy
Our chartered physiotherapists design a personalised rehabilitation programme to address muscle imbalances, restore spinal mobility and build the core strength needed to protect the spine long-term. This runs alongside decompression to maximise and maintain results.
Postural & Lifestyle Guidance
We advise on posture, ergonomics and daily habits that reduce load on the lumbar spine helping you stay pain-free between sessions and after treatment is complete.
Your Treatment Journey
Initial Assessment
A thorough clinical assessment to understand your history, identify the source of your sciatica and confirm suitability for decompression.
Personalised Treatment Plan
A tailored programme combining decompression sessions and physiotherapy, typically over 4–8 weeks depending on severity.
Decompression Sessions
Each session lasts approximately 30 minutes. Most patients notice a reduction in leg pain within the first few sessions.
Rehabilitation & Discharge
As pain resolves, we transition to active rehabilitation and provide a home exercise programme to maintain your results.
What the Research Says
Non-surgical spinal decompression is supported by a growing body of clinical evidence for disc-related sciatica.
Apfel et al.
Journal of Multidisciplinary Healthcare
2010
A multicentre study found that non-surgical spinal decompression produced significant reductions in pain and disability in patients with lumbar disc herniation and radiculopathy, with 71% of patients reporting good to excellent outcomes.
Macario et al.
Pain Physician
2006
A systematic review of VAX-D decompression therapy found statistically significant improvements in pain scores and functional outcomes in patients with chronic low back pain and sciatica, with benefits maintained at follow-up.
